Can a monarch be dethroned?

The title pretty much sums it up :-) I'm just wondering from a hypothetical standpoint whether or not a monarch can be dethroned. If so, what kind of offense would they have to commit for this to happen? What would happen to them if they were taken off of the throne? Any information is great but details are always appreciated!
