Re:Chain of Memories (Kingdom Hearts) Problem?

I just got the PS2 game Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, but I can't get past the first fight (the one in Traverse Town with the cloaked man). From watching videos/walkthroughs on Youtube, I gather that when you first appear, you have to run forward and collect the Donald card. However, my game automatically transfers the card into my deck. When I run forward nothing happens (the game doesn't notice that I've already picked up the card, I guess). I mean, I can dodge-roll/jump/etc...just not attack. I've restarted the game/tried about three times, with the same results. Has anyone else had this problem? Can it be fixed, or do I have to buy a new version of the game? Any help/tips are much appreciated. Thank you!
